With a projected release date of 2010 and directed by Breck Eisner, Flash Gordon will be written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. There’s not a lot of solid information yet, but if reports are to believed then we’re going to get an adaptation that is much more faithful to the original sources than the horrible Sci-Fi channel series. That means we should get the real Hans Zarkov, a Ming who is actually Merciless and hopefully Flash and Dale will get to the planet Mongo in some sort of rocket ship.
I’m a big fan of Flash Gordon and it’s been a source of great disappointment to me how poorly the character has faired in the modern adaptations. I enjoyed the 80s movie as campy as it was, but honestly that last good adapation was probably the Buster Crabbe black and white serials and that’s a long time ago.
It is a difficult challenge to take a pulp hero and have him work in a modern movie, but I don’t think it’s an impossible one.
