How Bad Is The Day The Earth Stood Still Remake?

Over at Aint It Cool News they’re absolutely savaging the script for the remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still which will star Keanu Reaves.

Now I really have to question the wisdom of making a revered 1951 sci-fi classic and putting Keanu in the lead role. It seems like they were asking for trouble. Of course since the movie is schedule for a December 2008 release, they still have time for some editing, but if the script really is a stinker there’s probably no coming back from that.

On the other hand, how bad is the script really? Certainly there are a number of things I don’t like the sound of, but this particular review spends far too much time complaining about differences between the original and the remake. Which kind of misses the point of doing a remake.

Bash the script on its own merits by all means, but this reviewer very obviously went in expecting to dislike it.

  1. Say it isn’t so! Not a remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still, too.

I’m tired of all the remakes.

Hey, I’m glad I am not the only one to at least give remakes and reimaginations a try. Someone was crying over the Speed Racer movie the other day and I just told him: If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. No one is forcing you. *I* wanna see it, and the only thing I am expecting from it, is a good ride (har har) based on the movie THAT IT IS! Not how I think it should be made. Cuz you know what? I ain’t making it, and neither are you. As they say, put up or shut up. If you can do better, make the movie, and I’ll shell out $18 (the approximate price of movie tix in Japan for one adult) to go see yours too.

    Tired of all the whining,

PS I *hate* Ain’t It Cool News. Spoilers galore, enough fanboys/girls to choke the Cloverfield monster, and waaaaaaaaay too much time on their hands.

Well, I wouldn’t mind a proper remake of Starship Troopers. It took a perfectly wonderful Heinlein story and turned it into some sort of caricature quite far removed from the story he wrote. It had a cringe factor of 11 out of 10 for bad script, really bad acting, and mediocre special effects.

I would have to know more about the script for The Day The Earth Stood Still. Keanu Reeves is not necessarily the worst choice and often gets unfairly criticised. He couldn’t simply imitate Michael Rennie, if that is even possible. I would be more offended if the actress who took the role filled by Patricia O’Neil was one of the current crop of blond or brunette clones. What about a reunion with Sandra Bullock? She has character, personality, and quite reputable acting ability.

  5. I agree with Robert. Starship Troopers was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. It belongs to the “If we put enought CGI in it, it will be a good movie” ilk.

  6. I’m with A.C.Ellis…I’m sick of the remakes. Can’t we get some new writers to write original stuff?
