Michael Seitzman To Adapt The Sparrow

It seems that The Sparrow, by Mary Doria Russell may get a movie adaptation. Apparently screenwriter Michael Seitzman is currently working on a screenplay based on the novel. The Sparrow is a science fiction book with religious overtones.

Set in 2019, a listening post in Puerto Rico pcisk up signals from another planet. United Nations diplomats debate endlessly on a first contact mission while the Society of Jesus goes ahead and organizes an 8 man expedition. When the lone survivor of that mission returns to Earth in 2059 he tries to explain what went wrong.

This is a pretty weighty story to attempt to turn into a movie. It’s certainly worthy material, but I’m not sure how well it will translate or how faithfully it will be adapted.

Michael Seitzman has a fairly short track record on movie writing, but his last was North Country which also had a serious subject matter. Somehow though, I find it hard to believe that Hollywood will be able to resist the lure of special effects and space ships.

Eoghann Irving is amongst other things the creator and Editor of Solar Flare. He has a life long interest in all forms of science fiction and fantasy and a pressing need to share this interest with anyone who will listen. Find out more at his personal website eoghann.com..
