San Diego Comic-Con 2008 News Roundup

Comic-Con is turning into a media phenomenon and I’m not foolhardy enough to try and do hourly updates on everything that happened. But for those of you who have the odd other thing to do in your lives, here’s a roundup of some of the news that came out of this years convention.

  • Garth Ennis & Steve Dillon return to Punisher
    In a six issue weekly Punisher: War Zone mini-series to be released this December Ennis and Dillon will bring back mob boss Ma Gnucc from their original run with the character. The mini-series is time to coincide with the Punisher: War Zone movie but doesn’t tie in.
  • Rose McGowan Will Be Red Sonja

    At panel on Thursday Robert Rodriguez and Rose McGowan confirmed previous speculation that she will be starring in a Red Sonja movie. The movie is set to begin filming later this year and Rodriguez says they are planning a 2009 release date

  • Wall-E and The Incredibles Come To Comics

    Boom! Studios have inked a deal with Disney/Pixar for comics based upon Pixar movies. Headlining that
    deal is an Incredibles comic written by Mark Waid.

  • Green Hulk / Red Hulk

    Marvel’s Hulk comic will become a split book with two short stories in each issue. One will feature Bruce Banner’s green alter-ego while the other will feature the Red Hulk. Starting with issue 7 artists Frank Cho and Art Adams will split the art chores.

  • More Doctor Horrible

    According to Joss Whedon there will be more Doctor Horrible. No details yet, but it seems that they’re looking to continue the internet distribution.

  • Image Founders Do Image United

    Marc Silvestri, Erik Larsen, Jim Valentino, Rob Liefeld, Whilce Portacio, and Todd McFarlane the original founders of Image Comics are teaming up with Robert Kirkman for a mini-series featuring their characters. To make it extra complicated each artist will be drawing their characters in each issue.

  • Boom! Announce Farscape and Eureka Comics

    Boom! have been busy they’ve signed Farscape creator Rockne S. O’Bannon to write a four issue mini-series which he refers to as “Season Five”. Boom! have also signed a deal for comics based on the Sci Fi show Eureka.

  • Vertigo To Launch Two New Books

    Vertigo announced G. Willow Wilson’s Air about an air hostess with a fear of flying and Seaguy 2: Slaves of Mickey-Eye by Grant Morrison and Cameron Stewart (to be followed by Seaguy Eternal).

  • DC Acquires Archie Superheroes

    The characters are to be incorporated into the DC universe in The Brave and the Bold by J. Michaael Stracynzski. Each character will get a two issue origin story.

  • DC Buys Milestone Characters

    DC has signed a deal that will bring back the Milestone characters from the 90s. Dwayne McDuffie one of the original Milestone creators will be utilising some of the characters in Justice League of America.

  • IDW Has Ghostbusters

    Keith Champagne and Tom Nguyen are behind a four issue mini-series featuring the characters of Venkman, Ray, Egon and Winston from the Ghostbusters movies. The series begins in October.

  • Grell Brings Back Warlord

    Mike Grell will be returning to sword and sorcery character The Warlord in 2009 when DC releases a new ongoing series in the spring.

  • Dark Horse Bring Back Aliens and Predator

    The licenses that put Dark Horse on the map are returning. Aliens, Predator and Aliens vs. Predator are all returning with new series at Dark Horse.

  • Terminator Salvation Writer Revealed

    Jonathan Nolan is the writer of the script for Terminator Salvation. Nolan was one of the writers of the Dark Knight (which also starred Christian Bale).

  • I Am Legend Sequel?

    Francis Lawrence, the director of I Am Legend is working to put together a sequel to the film. No details at this stage.

  • Mark Millar Returns To Ultimate Line

    One of the architects of Marvel’s Ultimate line of comics is going to return after the Ultimatum event. Details are sketchy but Millar claims his artist is the “biggest in the business”. Characters involved include Captain American, Iron Man, Blade, Punisher, Ghost Rider and Spider-Man.

  • War of Kings Is Marvel’s Next Cosmic Event

    Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning will be working on the next cosmic event which will feature amongst others Black Bolt and the Inhumans vs. the Shi’ar Empire. Expect to see the Starjammers, the Guardians of the Galaxy and Nova caught in the crossfire.

  • Neil Gaiman On Batman

    In January Neil Gaiman and Andy Kubert will team up for a Batman story with the title “Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?”. Is the title significant, it’s eerily similar to “Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?”.
