Steven Spielberg and Stephen Sommers Collaborate on When Worlds Collide

Stephen Sommers will direct the Steven Spielberg produced remake of the science fiction classic When Worlds Collide according to Variety. Sommers will also write the screenplay for the movie. Sommers had been previously attached to the movie but subsequently dropped out.

Sommers who directed the two Mummy movies became involved with the When Worlds Collide remake again when he dropped out of the fantasy film A Night at the Museum due to creative differences.

Because of his previous involvement with the project it is anticpated that Sommers will be able to turn around the script quickly and a draft may even be complete within the next three months.

The original When Worlds Collide was released in 1951 and directed by Rudolph Maté. In the original movie a group of astronomers calculate that a planet is on course to pass close enough to Earth to cause tidal waves and other natural disasters. A second planet will hit the Earth. They build a rocket so that a few individuals can escape on to the first planet.

Eoghann Irving is amongst other things the creator and Editor of Solar Flare. He has a life long interest in all forms of science fiction and fantasy and a pressing need to share this interest with anyone who will listen. Find out more at his personal website
